Derbyshire's innovative nursing rotation scheme, designed to nurture newly-qualified nurses (NQNs) across diverse healthcare settings, is facing the axe due to financial constraints. The Derbyshire Nurse scheme, a 12-month program, offered graduates the chance to rotate through hospitals, mental health wards, and community care, enhancing their skills and experience. Despite its success and recognition as a finalist in the Nursing Times Awards 2024, the scheme's future is uncertain. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) expresses disappointment, emphasizing the scheme's role in broadening new nurses' clinical expertise. Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust (DCHS), the program's leader, cites funding pressures as the primary reason for the decision to pause recruitment. The program, comprising three six-month rotations, has already provided 53 NQNs with valuable experience since its inception. The trust acknowledges the financial challenges faced by all organizations and hopes the program will be reconsidered in the future. The RCN spokesperson laments the loss of an opportunity for NQNs to diversify their clinical practice, highlighting the importance of integrated patient care in health and social care. Abby Trainer, chief nurse at DCHS, acknowledges the program's value but understands the need for difficult organizational choices. Krishna Kallianpur, chief nurse at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, shares a similar sentiment, prioritizing funding for immediate service needs. University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust confirms its withdrawal from funding but continues to directly recruit and train NQNs. The scheme's end by August 2026 leaves a void in nursing development, prompting discussions on the future of similar initiatives in the region.
