By day, she's meticulously organizing projects for the NHS. By night, she transforms into Chidimma, a rising R&B and neo-soul artist captivating audiences with her music.
Rosemary Nwodoh, a 26-year-old hailing from Chatham, splits her time between the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury and music venues across the country. Her journey into music took a serious turn during the Covid-19 pandemic. Like many of us, Rosemary found herself with more time for introspection. This period of isolation became a catalyst for exploring her musical talents. "I had a lot of time on my hands, as many people did, and started to think more seriously about music as a career," she explains.
And this is the part most people miss... Rosemary wasn't just exploring a new passion; she was also re-evaluating her career path entirely. She made a significant decision to shift gears from her final year of a law degree to dedicate herself to the health sector. Now working for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, she also lends her voice as a voiceover artist. "I fell out of love with law," Rosemary admits, "and started to look at creative opportunities."
The pandemic, with its profound impact on our perspectives, played a crucial role in her decision. "I think at that time there was a bit of a universal feeling of more gratitude for life and the time that we have," she reflects. This sentiment sparked a deeper consideration of her true passions and how she could share them with others.
"I've always loved singing and I was part of choirs throughout school, so I started to write music and record it with my brother at home," she shares. "From there the passion grew." From those initial home recordings, Chidimma's musical journey has blossomed into performing at various venues and releasing her own music.
Interestingly, Rosemary's project management skills have proven invaluable in navigating the business side of her music career. "Although it's very different to music, the skills are useful for the business side when it comes to booking gigs or studios and planning recording sessions," she notes. This highlights how seemingly disparate skills can complement each other in unexpected ways – a testament to the power of transferable skills.
Chidimma has already released singles and an EP titled "Love, Chidimma." Writing and performing music are, in her own words, her "favourite things to do." She approaches her dual career with a refreshing sense of openness and optimism. "For now, I'm happy to do it whenever I can and see what happens," she says. "I never thought I would have an EP out so who knows what this year will bring?"
What's truly inspiring is Rosemary's ability to find joy and fulfillment in both her professional and creative pursuits. It's a reminder that we don't have to limit ourselves to a single path.
