Cage, a well-known comic book enthusiast, purchased it back in 1996 for $150,000, a record price at the time. Think about that for a second: $150,000 for a comic book! It shows just how seriously some people take these collectibles.
Then, in 2000, disaster struck. During a party at Cage's home, the comic was stolen! For over a decade, it vanished, becoming a legendary lost treasure in the comic book world. And this is the part most people miss... The theft, ironically, may have contributed to its increased value over time.
Eleven years later, in 2011, the missing Action Comics No. 1 was miraculously discovered in a storage unit in California. Can you imagine the relief and excitement Cage must have felt? "During that 11-year period, it skyrocketed in value. The thief made Nicolas Cage a lot of money by stealing it," quipped Stephen Fishler, CEO of Metropolis Collectibles/ComicConnect, the broker involved in the recent sale.
Cage was reunited with his prized possession, but only briefly. Six months later, he decided to sell it at auction, fetching a cool $2.2 million. A hefty profit, but a fraction of what it's worth today.
So, what makes this comic so special? Beyond being Superman's debut, Action Comics No. 1 is credited with essentially inventing the superhero genre as we know it. Before Superman, there weren't really costumed crusaders fighting for justice in the same way. Fewer than 100 copies of the original Action Comics No. 1 are believed to still exist, making each one incredibly rare.
This particular copy was graded a near-mint 9 out of 10 by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), which specializes in authenticating collectibles. This makes it one of the highest-graded copies in existence, further driving up its value. The CGC grading scale is a key factor in determining the value of collectible comics, essentially acting as a seal of approval and a guarantee of authenticity and condition.
Fishler even drew a comparison between this comic's story and the theft of the Mona Lisa: "The recovery of the painting made the Mona Lisa go from being just a great Da Vinci painting to a world icon - and that's what Action No 1 is. An icon of American pop culture." This is a bold statement, but it highlights the cultural significance that some attach to this comic.
The original price of Action Comics No. 1 was just 10 cents, which is equivalent to around $2.25 today when adjusted for inflation. That's quite the return on investment!
