The Luna 9 lander, an uncrewed mission, achieved a historic first by successfully touching down on the Moon in 1966, even before the famous Apollo missions. However, its final resting place remained a secret, as its batteries failed after sending back a single image.
Now, a team of scientists has employed a clever strategy. They developed a computer program, creatively named "You-Only-Look-Once-Extraterrestrial-Artefact" (Yolo-Eta), which analyzed hundreds of images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Yolo-Eta's keen eye spotted unusual marks on the Moon's Ocean of Storms, which could be the result of Luna 9's descent.
The lander's unique design, featuring a spherical capsule and inflated airbags, left its mark on the lunar surface. It bounced several times before coming to a rest, thanks to its four-petal-like panels. This distinctive signature helped Yolo-Eta pinpoint its location.
In their research paper, published in npj Space Exploration, the team described how they identified a specific area near 7.03 degrees north, -64.33 degrees east, as the most likely spot for Luna 9. Within this area, they found small marks that could be components of the spacecraft and a series of craters that might correspond to its impact sites.
The researchers compared their findings with the photography from Luna 9 itself, and the match was convincing based on the horizon and overall topography.
"These results identify a small cluster of features that align with spacecraft hardware," the researchers concluded.
