Greenland: A Controversial Move by Trump
The US President Donald Trump has made a bold announcement, threatening to impose a 10% tariff on Europe, including France, the UK, and Denmark, starting February 1st, unless the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that these tariffs would be implemented on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland. The tariffs would increase to 25% on June 1st and would continue until a deal is reached for the US to purchase Greenland, as Trump claims it is vital to US security due to its strategic location and mineral deposits.
But here's where it gets controversial... Trump's tariffs target European countries that have deployed troops to Greenland at Denmark's request. This move has sparked debate, as some argue that the US needs to 'own' Greenland to build Trump's Golden Dome missile shield, while others question the ethical implications of such a purchase.
The local population of Greenland strongly opposes the idea, with 85% of residents opposing the territory joining the US, according to a January 2025 poll. This highlights the potential for a divided opinion on the matter.
European Council President Antonio Costa stated that the EU is considering its response, emphasizing its commitment to defending international law. The EU's stance adds another layer of complexity to this controversial issue.
